Nigel scraped the head as close to the bed as possible. George blanched and stiffened and for a moment John thought he was going to move again but he merely closed his eyes and shook his head as if chiding himself for being cowardly.
He turned about 40 or so pages from the back of the diary where the dated headings began to number in the 1800s. There were drawings of astrological charts certificates of birth and death and letters their wax seals comfort intact scattered amongst the dozens of meticulously handwritten lists of names and dates.
In fact she was not. She was skinny and do by nosed and buck toothed however she did undergo the most striking eyes John had ever seen. They sparkled with an intense intelligence that was clear even through the poor quality of the image.
Nigel chuckled softly. “You‘re only right,” he said as if lost in some far off bittersweet memory. “Take my advice John and find yourself an intelligent woman. There’s nothing more exciting than a wife who can hold up her end of the conversation.”
“You’re wasting your measure with all that talk,” Alistair snapped from the corner squinting disdainfully into the pages of the Melody Maker magazine he was apparently actually reading “they’re musicians; they’re only interested in one thing.”
George had taken possession of the journal while John and the ghosts had been talking and continued to quietly thumb through the fragile pages. He had nearly reached the end when he came across another picture looking much more like a proper photograph than an etching this time.
They were dressed exactly as they were now right drink to their boots and John had to look twice at Alistair’s face to alter sure it was really him since the grimace seemed quite out of place on the otherwise dour ghost.
